Peninsular War Scrimshaw Powder Horn, c.1809 - 1814. This beautifully detailed scrimshaw powder horn was carved by a veteran of the Coldstream Guards as identified on the silver plate at the base. The horn is 12 1/2 inches long and 2 5/8 inches at the widest point, depicting a battle scene with cannon, buildings, and British military symbols. Within a long scroll are the names of the major battles fought between 1809 and 1814, including: Oporto (May 12, 1804); Talavera (July 28, 1809); Salamanca (July 22, 1812); Vitoria (June 21, 1813); St. Sebastian (August 31, 1813) and Bayonne (April 14, 1814). Also shown is the Coldstream Guards symbol below the King’s Crown. The nameplate button at the base reads: Jos. (Joseph) Musto, 2nd Foot Gds. From its silver-tipped cap to the silver button nameplate, this ornate horn is truly a reflection of the ardor and achievements of a historic campaign and those who served.
