The Death of Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. Shortly before 1.30 p.m., Nelson, who had steadfastly refused to cover the stars on his coat was hit by a bullet from the mizzen top of the French galleon Redoutable. Soon after he was carried below. The marksmen had virtually cleared the decks of Victory and, seeing this carnage, Midshipman Pollard and Signal Quartermaster King took a keg of bullets and muskets and kept up a steady fire until no men remained in the Redoutable’s tops. Pollard was later congratulated by Captain Hardy for avenging his Admiral’s death. The copper engraving was produced by Charles W. Sharpe from the painting by Daniel Maclise and published by The Art Union, c.1860. The panoramic image is 45 x 12 inches in a hand lined matt, ready to frame. Very Rare.
