Shako Rouleau, Colonel 7e Hussards de Marbot, 1815. This magnificent artifact is the Shako Rouleau of a field grade officer, in this case, Colonel Marbot who commanded the 7e Hussar Regiment at Waterloo. It is patterned directly after the original on exhibit in the Musee de l’Armee in Paris, which is depicted and described in Petard-Rigo’s La Cavalerie (see enclosed photo). The hunter green Rouleau of late Empire manufacture has unusually ornate trimmings, including soutache interlocking circles, gold lace appliqué and loop, gold and silver bullion field badge, moiré cockade, lion head chain hangers and cock feather plume. Materials used include: Fuller’s board, woollen broadcloth, original 19th century gilded brass chinscales, oak tanned leather, Belgium sheepskin, linen fabric, original 19th century gold lace, gold bullion cord, vintage metallic soutache, maple wood, iron wire, brass wire, sheet brass, silk moiré, cock feathers and Spanish cane.
