Carabinier Sabre de Troupe, c.1797

Carabinier Sabre de Troupe, c.1797

AN IV Carabinier Sabre de Troupe, c.1797. This is a rare early example of the regulation sabre de Troupe de Carabinier, with the blade handsomely engraved with the identification, Carabiniers de la Republique Francaise, between two stamps, a Phrygian bonnet and a grenade.   The 37 inch flat blade has one further circular stamp just below the hilt and is otherwise lightly marked with small spots and patches of oxidation accumulated during the last 200 years.  The fine triple branch brass hilt guard is adorned with a grenade emblem on the front; the hilt retains the original black leather and wire wrapped grip. The black leather scabbard with scalloped brass ring mounts and drag is completely original. From the collection of Roger Gonnard via Philippe Missilier.
